Shrimp (grass and penaeid)

Count the clawed legs. Two pairs or three — that is the whole family key.

First checkToothed blade over the eyes, humped back, fan tail. Then count how many front leg pairs carry claws: two is a grass shrimp, three is a penaeid.

There is one clean, sourced separation in this group and it is worth learning because almost nothing else in shrimp identification is this tidy. A grass shrimp has claws on the first TWO pairs of walking legs. A penaeid — your brown, white and pink shrimp — has them on the first THREE of five. South Carolina states the same contrast from the other side, in plain field words: unlike white shrimp, grass shrimp lack claws on their third pair of walking legs.

Everything else about the two is a matter of degree. A grass shrimp is small, rarely past about 50 mm, and so close to transparent that Texas describes them vanishing among the cordgrass and the Chesapeake Bay Program notes you can see a female's egg mass straight through her. A penaeid is much bigger — up to about 178 to 203 mm — and opaque. If you are holding something see-through and short, the leg count will confirm what you already suspect.

The rostrum is the other thing to look at: a pointed, serrated blade projecting forward over the eyes with teeth along its edges. It is the most shrimp-looking thing about a shrimp and it is properly sourced, which is more than can be said for most of what is written about how these animals swim. No consulted source describes a grass shrimp's swimming gait at all — not the hover, not the escape flip, nothing.
