That is also where the honesty runs out. Telling a fingernail clam from a young Asian clam or a juvenile mussel rests on how raised the growth ridges are, on a shell five millimetres across. That is the distinction that matters ecologically — it is the native-or-invasive one — and it is not a distinction anybody makes on a stream bank.
