Hold a bay anchovy up against the sky and you can read the backbone through it. Nothing else in this wave does that. The body is described as slender, silvery-green and translucent, grey-shaded over the back, with a narrow silver line down the middle of the side and an eye that looks a size too big for the head.
The stripe is the trap. Everyone reaches for it, and it is genuinely there — but Florida's own description says it is often faint or absent toward the front, and, in the single most useful sentence in the sources for this group, that it fades after death. So a beached fish with no stripe is not evidence against anchovy. It is evidence that the fish is dead.
One more correction worth carrying. Anchovies have a reputation for a big overhanging snout, and the Pacific northern anchovy does have one. But the bay anchovy's is described by Florida as very short and only slightly overhanging the mouth. Bay anchovy: short blunt snout, huge mouth, one dorsal, see-through. That is the animal.
