First checkLook at the underside where the pelvic fins should be. If there is nothing there, and the dorsal runs most of the length of the back, that is a sand lance and you can stop.
Most small silver fish deal with being eaten by schooling tighter and swimming faster. Sand lance took a different route: they dive into the seabed. Head first, at sixty to seventy-five degrees, wriggling until about a quarter buried, then settling to a shallower angle and stopping. A researcher with a stopwatch measured them leaving again at fifty to eighty centimetres a second and accelerating to a hundred and twenty within the first metre and a half off the bottom. That is not a fish hiding. That is a fish with an exit strategy.
Which is why the sand matters more than the fish does. They need clean, coarse, well-washed sand or fine gravel — no mud, no rock. Find that bottom and you have found the habitat; find mud and you have not, whatever else is swimming there. The schools sit from the surface down to about twenty metres, packed vertically and bluntly linear, half to three-quarters of a body length apart when cruising and a quarter of a body length apart when something is coming.
In the hand it is the easiest call in this whole wave, and the character is an absence. There are no pelvic fins. None. Every other small silver fish on this coast has them; the sand lance family simply does not. Add one dorsal fin running most of the back and a lower jaw that leads, and you are done.
