A water boatman is a flattened oval bug that rows with one pair of long oar-like hind legs and swims the right way up. That last clause is the whole entry, because its near-twin does the opposite, and this is the pair anglers get backwards more reliably than any other in still water.
The back is the second check and it is easier in poor light: flat, and ruled across by several narrow dark parallel lines. A backswimmer's back is keeled like the bottom of a boat and carries no crosslines. Then the front feet — a boatman's are shaped like scoops and fringed with hair, because it is scraping algae and detritus rather than grabbing anything. And Missouri says the useful thing outright: this is one of the few aquatic true bugs that is not a predator and does not bite people.
Both of these animals are bugs, not beetles, and the character that settles that is the mouth: a beak rather than chewing jaws. Do not use the silvery air bubble — both bugs and diving beetles carry one — and do not use the head-down posture at the surface, because a diving beetle rests exactly the same way. Two of the three things people reach for are shared.
